My earliest memory is making peach cobbler with my grandmother. A wonderful memory.
Rick Bayless, American Chef
It’s Sunday “Drink” time. Will you be a peach, dear, and pass me the Crown Royal?
We aren’t making drinks so much, as we are pouring desserts—well, grown-up desserts. And as desserts go, you will not find a smaller list of ingredients to make a powerful first impression. I’m getting ahead of myself though. First, let me introduce you to my two “friends” from the bar—before we marry them off.
Meet my new companion in a glass, Crown Royal Peach. Not every flavor-infused liquor makes the cut. Many of them are too sweet and syrupy, or just not true to the flavor on the bottle. But, I can assure you that Crown Royal has knocked it out of the park with their summertime Peach Crown. They have perfectly blended their trademark whisky with sweet Georgia peaches to create a warm sip of summer on your lips. Get it while you can though, because Crown Royal Peach is seasonal. (I not-so-secretly hope they change their mind about that.) I enjoy it simply sipping it over ice. It is silky smooth, subtly sweet, and perfectly peachy!
And second, allow me to introduce an old love of mine, Rumchata. It’s a completely decadent spinoff of Mexican horchata (sweet rice water), mixed with real dairy cream, and of course, rum. Traditionally, horchata de arroz is made with white rice, vanilla bean, and cinnamon. It can take the form of a sweet drink or ice cream. Yum! So naturally, how could you possibly go wrong adding rum? You can’t! Rumchata is without question a delicious stand-alone drink. Stored in the refrigerator, then poured over ice, it is cold on the tongue like ice-cold milk, but warm and comforting in the belly. I like to think of it as “grown-up milk” because it makes a perfect little nightcap just before bed.
When Rick Bayless was making peach cobbler with his grandmother, I’m not sure this is what they had in mind. Ah. . . . times change for the sweeter. So, here we are celebrating the marriage of an old love and a new friend. This Sunday, or any Sunday—or any day, for that matter—you must simply try these delectable Peach Cobbler dessert drinks! They’re so simple to make. Let me show you how.
