It is so important to take time for yourself and find clarity. The most important relationship you have is with yourself.

Diane von Furstenberg

As the novel Coronavirus has seemingly paralyzed our world, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Quarantines are in place and being homebound is the ‘new normal.’ It is imperative to understand that as we are forced to shift, we still have choices.

Yes, it may seem a daunting task to focus on anything other than the news, the life we once knew, what we are going to eat next… but—taking care of ourselves and our health has become our number one priority, now more than ever!

Here are the best tips for self-care in quarantine.

Practice Gratitude.
It is easy to become swept away in the misery of mourning our pre-corona life. Practicing gratitude throughout the day can help shift your focus away from the negative and toward the positive.

Staying grateful and keeping things in perspective creates a healthy mental pattern that is easier to stick to than dwelling in the dumps. Try writing in a journal what you are grateful for every day, even if it is the same few things each day. You’ll soon realize you have A LOT to be thankful for and attract positive, healing energy.

Limit News Watching.
As each day brings new and scary information, it is vital to limit your daily news intake. Over-stimulus to contradicting messages can send your brain into overdrive. Going on a strict “media” diet helps keep things in perspective.

Binging on media can increase feelings of anxiety and lack of control. A top chief nutrition officer, Samantha Cassetty, RD, shares, “…timespent on social media can heighten anxiety and body image concerns…Stay informed so you can remain vigilant, but maybe cap the time you spend watching or reading the news.”

Instead, try:
– Exercising
– Reading a book
– Calling a loved one.

Establish a Morning Routine.
There is nothing more important than establishing a routine, especially in the morning! To combat feelings of disarray, setting an alarm clock can help set the tone for your day. In your first waking hours, do things you love! Read, water your garden or take a walk around your neighborhood.

Having something to look forward to in times of uncertainty can prove quite therapeutic. Many people are without jobs or working from home. So dedicate the first hour of your morning TO YOURSELF and see how wonderfully your day unfolds.

Try Yoga and Meditation.
There is a reason yoga and meditation have been around up to 10,000 years. In a world of constant digital stimulus and face-in-screen, learning to calm the mind is an essential skill. If you are new to yoga and meditation, downloading apps such as Calm, Headspace or simply signing onto YouTube can provide a healthy mental outlet.

Guided yoga and meditation are proven to decrease anxiety, boost immunity and generate feelings of peace. A great side effect is detoxing the body and learning to be present in the moment. The kids can join in too!
