The Haunted Graveyard (Maple Whiskey Cocktail)

The hallowed ground on which headstones rest provides infinite peace. So much so, that over 3.5 million visitors walk the famous grounds of the Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France, to daydream along the verdant paths and maybe even spot the tombstones of famous icons like Jim Morrison, Maria Callas, Marcel Proust or Edith Piaf.
Warm your bones on a chilly night in the graveyard with this blend of warm soothing whiskey and maple syrup. Beware the smooking rosemary sprig garnish, as it may attract some ghoulish attention!

Equipment

  • Rock glass

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Jack Daniels whiskey
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 orange slice per cocktail
  • 4-6 dashes Angostura Orange Bitters
  • 1 sprig rosemary
  • Ice

Instructions

  • Add whiskey (or bourbon) and maple syrup into a cocktail shaker. Top with ice and orange slices and sprig of rosemary. Shake well for at least 30 seconds.
  • Serve with ice in a short whisky or rock glass. Be sure to strain.
  • Place orange slice in glass as a garnish, along with a smoking rosemary sprig.
  • For a Virgin Haunted Graveyard, eliminate the whiskey and bitters and replace with apple cider.

Notes

To really set the spooky scene, garnish with a stem of smoking fresh rosemary. To do this, use a kitchen blow torch or long match to light it. Try to use the freshest, greenest rosemary you can find to ensure that it smokes and doesn’t start an actual flame.
